Now you can connect differential SCSI devices to single-ended SCSI systems and single-ended SCSI devices to differential SCSI systems. Also, with two SD16B converters you can place SCSI devices as much as 200 feet away!
No need to modify SCSI devices or drivers: just plug your single-ended SCSI cable into one end and your differential cable into the other end. All the SCSI devices in your system will be accessible.
Many systems use single-ended SCSI because of the low cost and large base of available devices. An increasing number of systems and devices use differential SCSI because of the improved noise immunity, increased drive stability and the longer attainable cable lengths - up to 25 meters (82 feet) for differential vs. 6 meters (10 feet) for single-ended.
All SD16B series models conform to the full SCSI ANSI standard. This includes managing the arbitration and disconnect/reconnect features of the latest systems, down to the SASI communications of earlier systems. They manage any possible signal conflicts such that they remain transparent to both differential and single-ended devices.
To further assure easy installation, Paralan converters have a unique Auto Sense circuit that automatically determines if 5 V power is needed for a remote bus termination. In addition, Paralan offers the exclusive Z Sense(tm) circuitry, which reduces noise on the bus caused by impedance mismatches.
The Model SD16B is a stand-alone converter box with its own external power supply. A circuit board version, Model SD17C, is available for mounting inside the computer or external drive case. It has all the features of the SD16B, but is in a 3.5" drive form factor and is made to be powered from a standard disk drive power connector.

Since SCSI is a bidirectional bus, a single converter is used to interconnect single-ended SCSI IDs with differential SCSI IDs.
Place the converter within 10 feet of the single-ended SCSI port. Up to 82 feet of cable may be placed between the converter and differential port, or 92 feet overall.
Paralan introduced the industry's first fast (10 MB/second) single/differential converter in 1992. The present model using our own ASIC is ULTRA SCSI compatible (40 MB/second).
Single ended: Two Paralan converters can extend the single-ended fast-wide SCSI bus up to 200 feet. Place each converter within 10 feet of the two single-ended SCSI ports. Then connect up to 180 feet of differential SCSI cable between them.
Differential: Two Paralan converters can extend the differential fast-wide SCSI bus up to 174 feet. Connect up to 82 feet of differential SCSI cable to each converter. Then connect up to 10 feet of single-ended cable between them.
To 1000 feet: If longer distances are required (up to 1000'), Paralan models SC20 (SCSI through coax cable) or SF40 (SCSI through fiber optic cable) SCSI Bus Extenders are recommended.
